Handmade Designs

All of our designs start as drawings with pen & paper
(AI is never used in our design work)

100% Cotton Canvas

We use premium, 12oz all-natural duck cloth canvas (100% cotton).

Non-Toxic Ink

Every flag is painted using archival quality
(but non-toxic) inks

Rust-Proof Grommets

We use solid brass, rust-proof grommets
for easy hanging, indoors or out.

Natural Protective Coating

Each flag is treated with an all-natural water & stain resistant coating.

Painting by Hand with Stencil & Brush

Every flag is handpainted using a stencil & brush to keep designs uniform, while giving each flag a unique texture & finish.

Frayed & Sealed Edges

The edges of our flags are intentionally frayed to provide a thin, "fluffed" edge around the flag. Our flags are unsewn, but a thin inner seam of durable acrylic gel is used to seal the edge from further fraying.

Responsible Production Practices

We take care during our flag production to reduce waste: All scrapped materials are responsibly recycled & flags are shipped in optimized packaging sizes to further reduce waste.

HOW OUR FLAGS ARE MADE

Every Porchdrawn Flag is made to order, filled with soul, and crafted with care:

1. Prewashing the Fabric

We prewash our fabric to remove manufactured fillings so your print locks to the canvas fibers, and to preshrink the fabric for stability and size control. This process is done by hand to avoid scarring the canvas (a common symptom when washing canvas by machine).

2. Cut to Size

Once washed, air dried and ironed, your flag is hand cut to the size & shape you selected. Since each flag is cut by hand, dimensions may vary by +/- 5%, and are usually cut ever-so-slightly larger so the 'frayed edges' don't cut into the final dimensions.

3. Fray & Seal Edge

Each side of the flag is frayed to expose a neat row of loose fibers, and the inner seam is sealed with a combination of acrylic gels to virtually eliminate further fraying or future loose strands.

4. Painting the Design

Each flag gets painted by hand using a stencil & brush, and the final details are filled in freehand. Once dried, the ink (and sealed edge) are heat pressed for a long-lasting, wash and light fast print.

5. Protection & Hardware

Your flag is coated with an all-natural water & stain resistant layer, providing up to 3 years of protection, and rustproof grommets are added for easy, flexible mounting.

6. Fluffing the Fray

The final step to bringing your flag to life is to "roughen" and loosen the fibers on the frayed edges so they return to a more 'cottonlike' state. This adds a defined, highly textured border around the edge of each flag, and gives it the final Porchdrawn touch.
